Link up
19th May 2010
We're going to meet informally at the Hebden Bridge Geek Up. The Geek Up is held the last Wednesday of every month 8pm Hole In T'Wall, it is described:
We’re holding a GeekUp style meet in Hebden Bridge, open to anyone who is a geeky about anything.
There is no formal agenda or presentations planned, we’ll see how it goes, hope it works and if it does we can to turn it into a regular event.
Most established Geek Ups are primarily aimed at techie geeks – We’d like to see ours better represent the area and to be something unique. So we’re throwing the door open to all geeks, if you’re obsessive about something (tech, beer, music, films, books, knitting…), come along.
The opportunity is there to find out what can be done to bring high quality internet access to the Calder Valley; and do so in a friendly and convivial atmosphere. The next 'meet' is Wednesday 26th May.
Campaign
20th January 2010
The pre-feasibility study is over and a new phase begins.
CVON will campaign to achieve of 50% representation of the households of the Upper Calder Valley. Those holdholds will commit to purchase a Fibre to the Home connection to the Internet. With that democratic and economic power the upgrade to the infrastructure can commence.
The meeting on the 30th November agreed that campaign will consist of the following elements:
- Our rural town's social and work lives need as good a technology as city people.
- Old fashioned word of mouth is how the 50% of households will be persuaded to support the upgrade of our towns.
- Activities by the CVON organisation are to engender, engage and support word of mouth.
- The campaign is divided into stages and targets have to be reached to progress to further stages.
- One Upper Calder Town: Hebden Bridge is chosen as a focus for activities.
Next meeting 3rd February TBC.
Open meeting scheduled
5th September 2009
On the 5th October 2009 we are going to present the culmination of this pre feasiblity study. We hope to lay out the evidence describing our neighbourhood's attitude to our future connection to information services. We will also describe what we think is the best plan to achieve our community's goals.
It will be held at 7pm at the Good Shepherd Church, Mytholmroyd.
You and whose army?
10th June 2009
A modern fast reliable network is needed for our rural area as much as anywhere; but you know we'll need an army to get one.
Broadband investment is a vast undertaking. Communities that have managed this upgrade themselves signed up over 90% households. That is quite an army.
The numbers are very important, we need the political and financial sway. We hope to engage people not just to agree with us but to also carry the torch and enthuse the people around them.
We can only get the ball rolling, your rural county needs you (and your army.)
Survey and a public appearance
13th May 2009
We have an online survey. Please fill it in, the information uncovered will guide this project.
To meet people face to face and ask for the completion of surveys we will be present on a stall on Monday 25th May of the Big Green Weekend.
More about the model for this project

Consultation strategies to be developed
25th March 2009
How will 'Our Net' reach and properly inform a very large proportion of households? Following the model developed in the Netherlands existing groups are to be approached. During the pre feasibility study we are sketching out who we think these groups are and how we might engage them in the upgrade of communications network. We know there are formal networks of people and informal groups of practice. We want to keep breaking this down until we have a picture of who there is to reach and what they may be concerned with. If we can't sit down and have a intelligent conversation about the subject one-to-one over a cup of tea, what is the next best thing? Indeed, do we have something interesting enough to engage someone in conversation intelligent or otherwise?
Pre-feasibility starts
1st March 2009
A six month project has started. Calder Valley Our Net (Interim) has embarked on the first part of a journey to offer fibre to the home next generation access to the community. For more information take a look at the business email: google groups.
